WORLD UNDER 21 FINAL

Fillippe Chong laid down an early marker as favourite with a win in his first race with the Scandinavian trio of Hasse Blomqvist, Bjorn Haagensen and Anders Solberg also winning their opening outing.  Chong beat Haagensen in heat 5 with the second of races seeing only the New Zealander remaining unbeaten and looking very much like justifying the bookies pre-meeting odds.

A third win sent Chong into the interval 2 points clear of the chasing pack of Boris Kravchuk, Blomqvist and Solberg.  Riding at number 1 meant Chong could now set the target but the watered track seemed to catch him out after the break and he fell to a shock defeat behind Eddie Mabo, Bart Williamson and Blomqvist.  The big question now though was could anyone strike and take advantage of this slip?  Kravchuk and Solberg met in heat 15 and it was the Russian who headed the heat home to put him a point ahead of Chong and Solberg at the top of the leaderboard.  Haagensen made it a trio of riders on 9 points with a win in heat 16.

Chong needed to keep the pressure on in heat 17 but with Kravchuk already having met the favourite in heat 1 the destiny of the title was in his hands whatever happened.  Chong did all he could by heading home Henk Knapke before a heat 18 win for Jakub Baran, ahead of Solberg and Haagensen, meant the title would be decided between Kravchuk and Chong.

This all made heat 19 a huge one, with Kravchuk lining up on the inside of Eddie Mabo, Olle Nyman and Rumun Dimotrov.  As the tapes rose it was a tough battle to the bend and Kravchuk found himself squeezed and came out of the first bends at the rear of the field.  Although Kravchuk knew 2 points would be enough for a run-off for the title he was looking to avoid that and went for a big swoop around both Dimotrov and Nyman around bends 3 and 4 but ran out of room as they all drifted and was forced to bail out with the referee putting the red exclusion light on.  Despite protests from Kravchuk that he had been left with nowhere to go video replays suggested no contact was made and the referee appeared to have got it right but it was a tough way for his title challenge to end.

After heat 20 had taken place Blomqvist won a runoff to take 2nd place overall with Kravchuk gaining some, small, consolation by grabbing 3rd place ahead of Solberg.

So we got the winner everyone expected with Fillippe Chong picking up the title by 2 clear points, despite his shock last in heat 13, and, at just 19 years of age, he will be back to defend the crown next season.  With so many teenagers in the field most of the riders who took part here will be eligible to return, in fact only Knapke, Dimotrov and Nyman will not, and next season promises to be an even tougher meeting than this one was.

You have to feel so sorry for Boris Kravchuk, who came so close to causing an upset here, but for now though Fillippe Chong sits on top of the world at junior level, in addition to currently holding a top 8 spot in the senior GP series.  Impressive stuff indeed for a 19 year old but his opponents will all want to be stronger next season and he will be very much a marked man when the Under 21 Final comes around once again.
