EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX

Could this have been the GP where LIAM REAY (MILTON KEYNES CATS) took the vital step to retaining his title as he won the round to extend his lead at the top to 14 points, with 3 rounds remaining?  Behind him CHRIS ADAMS (WEDNESFIELD WANDERERS) added 15 points to move back up to 3rd overall while NICK AMBROSE (CANVEY ISLAND CASTAWAYS) also had a good round to maintain his 2nd place in the standings.  MACIEJ TERCJAK (MILTON KEYNES CATS) completed the Grand Final lineup here and his 16 points moves him back into a top 8 place overall.

PETR VERNER (WHITBY VAMPIRES) scored 12 points in the round to move up a place in the standings and he is now just 6 adrift of securing a top 8 place in the final standings.  Also amongst the Semi Finalists were STEEN ERIKSEN (CANVEY ISLAND CASTAWAYS) and SCOTT BRIDGES (ABERAVON GEMS) who consiladated their top 8 spots, both moving up a place overall.  Wild Card TIBOR NEMECEK (KING'S LYNN LIGHTNING) produced a fine performance to register 10 points and show he is more than at home at the highest level.

Behind the top 8 nobody really had a good day with the highest scorers, MARTIN SHAW (WEDNESFIELD WANDERERS), GABRYS IRZYK (BRATISLAVA BUZZARDS) and HAYDEN WOOD (LANARKSHIRE LIONS) scoring 6; Irzyk slips outside the top 8 but is just 2 points away from automatic qualification for next season's GP series but the other two have a lot of work to do to avoid the GP Challenge.  DENIS GOMOZOV (ABERAVON GEMS) also slipped down the rankings away from the top 8.  FILLIPPE CHONG (WANTAGE KINGS) and OLLE BJORN THORESEN (TEESSIDE TRANSPORTERS) only scored 4 each but they do retain their top 8 spots but will need better performances than today's if they want to maintain their challenges.  BRAXTON MCCHESNEY (TEESSIDE TRANSPORTERS) and HANS E BERGESTOL (TEESSIDE TRANSPORTERS) both had days to forget, which they will want to put behind them as soon as possible, particularly Bergestol who now finds himself 4 points behind 8th place overall.  Reserve JENS ISAKSEN (LANARKSHIRE LIONS) took a single ride and picked up 2 points to once again confirm he is at home at GP level should he be able to secure a permanent place in the series.

So the next round sees the GP riders move to the British round and Liam Reay will be wanting to strengthen his position further while fellow Brits Ambrose and Adams will want good 'home' performances to keep their rostrum places in tact.  Behind the trio are a group of riders still with top 3 ambtions and right down the field the majority know that a big score will at least help them towards a top 8 place and mean they can avoid the season ending GP Challenge.
