WORLD PAIRS SEMI FINAL 1 top 3 sides qualify + highest scoring 4th place side |
There were no real shocks in this Semi as Norway, Sweden and America qualified fairly comfortably. Norway were immaculately led by maximum man Hans E Bergestol with Olle Bjorn Thoresen offering good support and reserve Rudi Juritzen helping to win the meeting with a final race 5-1 after Thoresen had withdrawn as a precaution following a tumble in the previous race, and with qualification already wrapped up. Sven Svensson raced to 17 points for Sweden with Lennart Levin scoring in all but one race, where he suffered an engine failure. America put together a strong team display with both riders reaching double figures. |
Finland came 4th as Niemi suffered some bad luck with Eskleninen stepping in from reserve to score well but too much work needing to be done. Irwin and Mabo both competed well for Australia but neither scored big enough points to threaten the top sides while Stoyanov was exellent for Bulgaria but received no real support. At the bottom old stager Petkovic battled gamely for Croatia but they were unable to find a heat winner between them all afternoon and were never likely challengers. |

WORLD PAIRS SEMI FINAL 2 top 3 sides qualify + highest scoring 4th place side |
Oleg Yelesnev led Russia to a surpise win in this meeting despite two early blanks for his partner Nikita Fedorenko; Denis Gomozov was used from reserve and supplied the support to the top man to help them claim top spot in this Semi. England made harder work of qualifying that expected but eventually eased through with Nick Ambrose offering solid support to Liam Reay. Poland also looked in trouble, after losing Maciej Tercjak to an injury, but Gabrys Irzyk won 4 of his races and Boguslaw Kryznowek came good in the final heats to see them through. They beat Denmark in a runoff for 3rd place but with both sides having already outscored Finland's 16 points in the other Semi both progressed to the World Pairs Final. The Danes were led by Jens Isaksen with 11+2 points and Henrik Hansen offered solid enough support to see them do enough to stay in the competition. |
Germany ran the top sides close with Juttke reaching double figures whilst Scotland finished on the same number of points but Bridges couldn't quite do enough in support of Treadwell to put them over the line. For Slovenia it was a familiar story with Verner excellent as always but lacking support to challenge the stronger pairings. |
