GRAND PRIX CHALLENGE SEMI FINAL 1

With only 4 places up for grabs a good start was essential in this meeting and the opening races were won by Ryan Irwin, Carsten Ostenstad, Ludek Janicek and Rafal Narozny.  The second round of heats saw Ostenstad and Narozny remain unbeaten and put themselves in strong positions, with Janicek and Johannes Flood just behind on 5 points.

Heat 9 saw Janicek suffer a surprise last place before the leading pair met in the next race where Narozny led home from Ostenstad to keep both in a strong position, 2 points clear of the chasing pack which was bunching up as just a point separated 3rd down to 10th.  Amongst the rest highly fancied Ila Niemi had just 2 points and Boguslaw Kryznowek only 1 and their chase for a GP place was looking all but over.

Heat 14 saw Flood move to 7 points before a win for Henrik Hansen took him to 8 points and put the highly fancied Dane back into contention, in that heat Janicek again ran a last to leave his hopes of progress seemingly all but over.  Heat 15 brought Ostenstad to the tapes with a trio of riders looking for a vital win to increase their chances of a top 4 spot with the result another win for the young Norwegian to seemingly all but wrap up a GP Challenge spot.  Behind him wily old Matija Petkovic moved to 8 points to put himself back amongst the leaders following an opening ride blank.  Narozny remained unbeaten in heat 16 and with Irwin at the back it meant the Pole had definitely booked a GP Challenge place along with Ostenstad who now couldn't be caught in the top 4.  Behind the pair Petkovic and Hansen had 8 points, Flood and Jerry Devazier were on 7 with Bruce Twamley a point further back and the final places would be decided between this quintet.

Heat 17 was to prove vital as Twamley, Hansen and Devazier all lined up alongside meeting leader Narozny.  A fine gate from Hansen saw him move to 11 points and become the third rider to seal a qualifying place while Twamley kept some hopes alive by picking up 2 points ahead of Narozny.  Petkovic came to the tapes in heat 18 knowing a win would see him complete the qualifying places but a slow start saw him fail to score as Niemi and Kryznowek led home, albeit too late for the pair to have any impact at the top of the scoreboard.  Graeme Black moved to 8 points, to join Petkovic and Twamley in joint 4th, with a win in heat 19 and now all eyes were on Flood in the final scheduled heat with the Swede knowing that 2 points would be enough to qualify.  The result of heat 20 didn't clear things up though as Janicek won to become another in the group on 8 points and with Flood in third place it meant 5 riders were now tied for the final GP Challenge place and a series of runoffs would be required.  Ostenstad took second in the heat meaning before the serious business got underway he would face a runoff for the top spot in the meeting which he eventually lost to Narozny but both were very happy with their day's work.

With 5 riders tied the runoff position wasn't a simple one and first of all Flood won from Twamley, with Black a faller at the first attempt, to confirm a place in the final runoff.  Experienced campaigner Petkovic then joined the Swede in the crunch race by beating young Czech Janicek.  Black and Janicek remained in the hunt in the next by eliminating Twamley to give a final race of the afternoon which lined up as Flood, Janicek, Petkovic, Black.  After missing his chance to seal qualification in heat 20 Flood made no mistake with his second chance to streak away and join Narozny, Ostenstad and Hansen in this year's GP Challenge lineup.  Janicek ran him close and must surely come into the thinking for the 1 Wild Card place in the GP Challenge along with Zevenbergen, who was unlucky with a crucial exclusion today, and Niemi and Kryznowek who had off days but have been producing form worthy of a GP place in league meetings this season.

GRAND PRIX CHALLENGE SEMI FINAL 2

American Ricky Antunovich dominated this meeting to book his place in the GP Challenge Final with some eash.  British pair Luke Treadwell and David Bedford also made it without too many problems whilst behind them there was a battle between several riders with the final place eventually being booked by Australia's Jason Isaacs.

After the meeting it was confirmed that Poland's Boguslaw Kryznowek will be rewarded for his sparkling form in the Ultimate League with the Wild Card place for the GP Challenge.  The meeting reserves will be Rudi Juritzen and Ludek Janicek with the remaining riders obviously to be completed by the bottom 7 finishers in the regular GP series.
